This is an excerpt from the 2008 Hamburg School of Music graduation concert DVD I directed and edited. Jul Kula is an emerging artist I've had the pleasure of recording before, and I really like his energy that seems to know no boundaries. I especially enjoyed this work for what I learned from my young and inexperienced camera people who did their best to ignore my director's instructions and provide me with trashier shots than I would have ever made myself (I operated the main central camera to ensure the cover footage). This also provided me with much more difficult editing choices than I had anticipated – 5 cams over a 4 hour show including 19 bands plus dialogueIinterviews between the school's founder-director, the artists themselves and Germany's famous TV host Reinhold Beckmann gave me more than enough to stay on my toes. In fact I edited most of the concert standing up by mounting my suite to a telescopic desk that I built myself 15 years ago. I find this an inspiring way to edit music and dance. You can move with what you're editing and that brings you closer to your material than sitting on your ass :-) I hope you enjoy it too and look forward to your comments. Michael [
