Hey Chris,

Thanks for your input. It all helps.

The Tauntaun and Wampa ARE traditional animated stop motion elements. I used a tad bit of motion blur to emulate the look of go-motion used in the original Tauntaun running shots, but as far as it's movement and that of it's rider... that is the way it was animated. Funny, The Wampa wasn't animated as smooth as we would have liked. The lighting was done with what ever lights we had laying around and I had to tweak it in the composite.
I also retimed the animation element in the final shot as a test to make the animation much easier as it would be hard to move it so little for each frame.

This was a test of what we could do; just two guys in a garage wondering what if.... It was fun to 'play' in ILM's sandbox.

Below are links to the green screen draw stop motion and then the final comps for each shot.

Cheers, Joe

a lot of work and love went into try to match the jerky stop motion.

Now, I give high praise for editing, but would we buy the new blu-ray version?

Now to be nit picky, because nothings perfect.
2:47 the lighting was off. Felt 2D, the total forward collective motion of the tonton was a perfect linear motion, too smooth and predictable while the rider's head felt like 60 fps was decimated to 12 fps.

Stop motion isn't less fps. It's the hand touching armatures so each motion in between is not uniform. Simply posterizing or decimating frames is a different look.

The best animation was the first look of the wampa. I bet that was keyframed by hand so was the closest to stop motion.

And the final shot its skin was too reflective and smooth.

If you remove these quibbles, you'd have something to be reckoned with, maybe even impress Lucas.
